The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says that about 30,000 injuries linked to garage doors are now reported every year in the United States. Many of these injuries have involved bruised or broken extremities. However, some have included serious shoulder, back, and head injuries leading to permanent disability or even death. What is the cause of these garage door injuries? One leading cause has been homeowners trying to repair or replace their own garage door springs.

So, why did my cable break? These cables move every time the door is operated and travel over a system of pulleys or wind on a cable drum or spool. Over time this part may wear from use or deteriorate from moisture near the bottom of the door. Should a pulley be suffering from faulty bearings it may also accelerate the wear. Should the door be out of adjustment the cable may be rubbing on other hardware items such as the track which will also accelerate wear. A visual inspection will often allow a cable to be replaced before it fails. Look for signs of corrosion, rust, fraying or excessive wear.
Whether you're planning on moving in the future or you're fixing up your forever home, replacing a garage door can provide an excellent return on investment and boost your home's resale value. Though you can do some maintenance to your garage doors on your own, it may be a good idea to schedule routine inspections with a professional. A typical service call will include a manual inspection of the door and opener. Then adjustments can be made including spring tension, chain/belt tension, limits and force adjustments and door lubrication. Fees for this service vary from place to place, but garage door repairs typically cost between $147 and $340.

Luckily, your garage door is a pretty sound investment. According to Garage Wow Now, garage doors were ranked in the top three for home improvements whose costs are recouped through increased home value. Similarly, realtors regularly increased the list price of a home with a new garage door by 1 to 4 percent! That means, if you spend $2000 on a new garage door, you can increase the value of your home by almost $8000 if you have a $200,000 home. Furthermore, compared with the other two highest rated improvements — siding replacement and deck installation — a garage door replacement is far more affordable.

Garage door cables can and do break on occasion. One reason the cable might break is simply age. Cables experience wear and tear just like any other working part. Over time, the cables can weaken and eventually snap. Garage door cables also break because of rust. Rust can corrode the cable, and unless you catch it in time, the rust will have eaten through the cable. Fraying is another problem that causes garage door cables to snap. Picture a rope. Rope is made up of smaller pieces of rope twisted together to make a thicker cord. Garage door cables work the same way. A lot of little wire cables are wound together to make a stronger, thicker cable.  If one of these little cables breaks, it could fray the other little cables around it until the whole thing eventually snaps.  No matter the cause, a broken cable is a big problem and warrants a call to a certified garage door repairman.

Garage door manufacturers typically produce garage doors fitted with torsion springs that provide a minimum of 10,000 to 15,000 cycles and are guaranteed for three to seven years. One cycle is a single opening and closing sequence. Most manufacturers offer a 30,000 cycle spring. However, it is important to remember that if the weight of the garage door is increased by adding glass, additional insulation, or even several coats of paint, the life of the torsion spring may be greatly reduced. Additionally, springs at highly humid environments, such as coastal regions tend to have a significantly shorter cycle life, due to the corrosive cracking.
This was the perfect example to how a business should be ran on every level. I called the owner at 545 am and not only spoke to him but scheduled for later that day. The technician arrived on time, was knowledgeable, personable, and professional. He explained the issue at hand and how to fix it with quality parts that will ensure the function of the door and, springs, and motor. I could not be happier with the experience and service. Rockstar garage door service is not just a great name, it's the truth. It would be foolish to give business to anyone else. And... if all of this wasn't enough. They cover all of San Diego County. Thanks guys!

When a torsion spring is wound up, it grows 2” in length. This is because the spring starts to compress and the metal has to go somewhere. After the spring is wound, the winding cone is clamped down on the torsion shaft so it can turn the drums to wind the cables as the door goes up. Since the end of the spring is “set” on the shaft, a two-inch gap is left when the spring break's. This is the most definite way of determining you have a broken garage door spring.

The new opener was installed yesterday and today for a while it wouldn't close properly. The customer service representative said they will probably have to reverse the sensors. However, no one could come out today (Friday) or tomorrow. She will call me by Tuesday of next week to schedule someone to come here. The customer service rep. and the technician were nice but as of now, my new garage opener is not working to my satisfaction.
